Mesh Splitter

The Mesh Splitter lets you make planar cuts to 3D mesh surfaces and objects.

Interface

The Mesh Splitter is one of eight tools found in the 3D Tools tab in the (Pre-version 12) Analysis Panel. Go to 3D View or 3D Plane View to show the 3D Tools tab. Click on the 3D Tools tab, and then click on the Mesh Splitter icon to launch the tool. The Mesh Splitter interface is shown below.

Mesh Splitter GUI

Tool options

The options and functions available in the Mesh Splitter tool are described in the following table:

NameIconDescription
Select Split Mode

Lets you choose the type of cutting plane to use for splitting the selected mesh surfaces

  • Split Modes
    • Infinite Plane generates an infinite cutting plane based on the drawn line and viewing angle
    • Under Drawn Line Only generates a cutting plane that only extends under the drawn line
Exclude Cutting Plane for Measurements

Lets you choose to exclude the cutting plane from some measurements, such as surface area
Draw Line

Enables/Disables drawing, which is used for generating a cutting plane
Split Selected

Splits the selected mesh surfaces

Using Mesh Splitter

To launch the Mesh Splitter tool, click on the 3D Tools tab in the Analysis Panel in Aivia, and then select the Mesh Splitter tool from the 3D Tools toolbar. This will open the Mesh Splitter interface.

Choose a Split Mode

To select a Split Mode, click to expand the Select Split Mode menu, and then choose one of the two available Split Modes. In Infinite Plane mode, a cutting plane is generated that extends infinitely in the direction that the image is viewed as well as infinitely along the direction that the line is drawn, perpendicular to the viewing angle. In Under Drawn Line Only mode, the generated cutting plane extends infinitely in the direction that the image is viewed but does not extend further than the drawn line in the direction that the line is drawn.

Exclude the cutting plane for measurements

Click to check the Exclude Cutting Plane for Measurements box to ignore the cutting plane when measuring surface area or any measurement that depends on surface area for split meshes.

Draw a line to define the cutting plane

Click on the Draw Line icon to enable/disable drawing. With Draw Line toggled on, click and drag the mouse across the image to draw a line for generating a cutting plane.

Split the selected mesh surfaces

Click on the mesh surfaces that you would like to split in order to select them. When you are satisfied with the cutting plane and which meshes are selected, click Split Selected to divide the selected meshes.
