Getting Started with IN Carta 3D Viewer

IN Carta uses Aivia to visualize data in 3D. To accommodate, Aivia is launched in a special mode that streamlines the application to features relevant to viewing your data from IN Carta. In this mode, the application is referred to as the “IN Carta 3D Viewer” instead of Aivia.

This page covers the basics of using the 3D Viewer and navigating its user interface. There are links to pages with more detailed information for specific features at the bottom of this page as well.

Navigation Basics

The computer mouse is the primary method for interacting with IN Carta 3D Viewer’s graphical user interface. You can hold down specific keys on your keyboard while clicking with the mouse for additional mouse interactions. Interactions involving the mouse only as well as the mouse and keyboard in combination are summarized in the table below.

3D View

Rotates scene freely

Zooms in or out smoothly

Double left click on image

 

Pans to the selected location and sets the location as the pivot point for rotation

Double left click on object

 

Zooms to the selected object and sets the center of that object as the pivot point for rotation

Right click and drag

Ctrl

Spins the camera

Shift

Zooms in or out of the scene smoothly

Ctrl + Shift

Rotates the scene about the center of view

3D View Toolbar

The IN Carta 3D Viewer is always open in 3D viewing mode, and the buttons in the toolbar have been simplified to match.

Reset View

Resets camera position and orientation to the default

Camera Viewing Axis

Sets the camera to look at the image along the given axis

Toggle Volume Bounding Box

Toggles the display of the white bounding box that surrounds the displayed image

Toggle Axis Display

Toggles the display of 3D axes indicating the X, Y and Z directions

Show FPS

Toggles the scene frame rate display

Set Maximum Volume Rendering Quality

Specifies the maximum volume quality percentage; the default value is 70%, sub-sampling (which is experimental) is used above 100%, and the renderer does not downsample the image volume when the image volume is moved and the maximum quality is above 110%

Toggle 3D Projection Mode

Allows you to choose whether parallel planes in the image always appear parallel on the screen (ON) or parallel planes in the image converge/diverge such that objects "farther" from the observer/camera appear smaller than those of the same size that are "closer" (OFF)

Toggle 3D Filtering Mode

Toggles the use of interpolation for creating smooth transitions between voxels

Set Backdrop Color

Specifies the background color in 3D View

Toggle Specular Lighting

Toggles the display of highlights on meshes

Toggle Dynamic Mesh Level of Detail

Allows you to choose whether dynamic mesh level of detail (dynamic mesh LOD), where high-LOD meshes are shown for objects that are close to the observer/camera and low-LOD meshes are shown for objects that are far from the observer/camera, is used (ON) or high-LOD meshes are loaded for all objects (OFF)

Open Mesh Visibility Options

 

 

Opens a menu of the following options for selectively showing/hiding meshes:

  • Show Only Selected Meshes

  • Hide Selected Meshes

  • Swap Hidden and Shown

  • Show Random Meshes

  • Show All Meshes
